The date of the settlement immediately followed the potato famine in Ireland which had effects on Great Britain as well.Įarly settlers included Donald McIntosh, Ronald McIntyre, Henry Saul, the James Ross family, and the Stewart family. A large number of immigrants were from all sections of the British Isles. Later it was split into East Williams (principal settlement Ailsa Craig) and West Williams (principal settlement: Parkhill) It was named for William Williams, Deputy Governor of Canada Company.
